Although that crunchy disc of dough we use as a vehicle for all our favorite pizza toppings makes our heart smile, it’s also a common cause for weight gain if enjoyed often. Most diets, especially if you are choosing a low-carb diet approach, do not support pizza because of the wonderful crust we all know and love.
It’s always hard to say goodbye to things we enjoy but what if you didn’t have to?
Simple swaps can make all the difference when it comes to eating healthier without feeling like you are missing out on all your favorite foods. Instead of kissing those delectable takeaway triangles goodbye in the name of health, try your hand at making your own, low-carb friendly alternative.
Swapping out that pizza crust for a lower carb option can make a surprisingly delicious meal without hiking up those numbers on the scale.
If you are new to this idea, never fear. There are many different options you can try to find the right pizza crust for you. Most popular alternatives to the traditional pizza crust ingredients include exchanging white flour for almond flour, coconut flour, and cauliflower just to name a few.
These swaps are popular for a reason. You are cutting out a ton of carbs and in some cases, adding in some protein as well. More protein means you are going to feel more satisfied when eating less.
To really make that pizza a low-carb, protein-powered treat, try adding cauliflower and pea protein to your pizza crust.
Naked Nutrition’s pea protein powder is a great option because of its superior amino acid profile that supports muscle growth and recovery. And they only source their protein from yellow split peas grown on American and Canadian farms.
This vegan/vegetarian-friendly recipe will make your pizza crust heartier and healthier without compromising on flavor.
Low-Carb, Protein-Packed Cauliflower Pizza Crust
- 1 head of cauliflower or 1 10-oz bag of fresh or frozen cauliflower rice
- 1 whole egg or two egg whites
- 1 scoop Naked Pea protein powder
- ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup shredded low moisture mozzarella cheese
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ tsp oregano
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- Freshly ground pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 400° Fahrenheit
If using a head of cauliflower, use a food processor or grater to rice the cauliflower. If using a bag make sure it is completely thawed. Steam cauliflower rice in the microwave for 5-7 minutes or as directed on the package and allow to cool.
Using a paper towel or cheesecloth, squeeze all the excess liquid out of the cauliflower.
In a large bowl, combine cauliflower rice with the remaining ingredients and mix until it resembles a dough.
Form the dough into a 10-inch circle on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.
Remove from the oven and top with sauce, cheese, and other desired toppings and place back in the oven on broil for 3-5 minutes.
Let it cool and enjoy!
